Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 18 in E-flat major, Op. 31, No. 3, often referred to as the Hunt Sonata, is a joyful and playful work, composed in 1802 during the same period as his more dramatic Tempest Sonata. While the nickname Hunt wasn’t given by Beethoven, it reflects the buoyant, lively spirit present throughout the sonata, particularly in its outer movements.

The first movement, Allegro, is characterized by its sparkling rhythms and syncopated, dance-like theme. Beethoven showcases his playful side here, with sudden changes in dynamics and clever phrasing. The second movement, Scherzo – Allegretto vivace, is light-hearted and mischievous, with rhythmic wit and unexpected pauses that give the movement a sense of humor. The third movement, Menuetto – Moderato e grazioso, brings a more elegant and lyrical atmosphere, offering a moment of calm in the sonata. Finally, the Presto con fuoco wraps up the sonata with an exuberant, energetic finale, full of galloping rhythms and rapid passages that reinforce its hunting imagery.

The Hunt Sonata stands out for its lightness and charm, displaying Beethoven’s mastery of contrast and texture. Its bright and spirited character makes it one of his most accessible and enjoyable piano sonatas.

My recordings of all 32 sonatas offer a deep exploration of Beethoven's emotional and structural range, connecting the listener with the composer's transformative journey through these masterpieces.

Reflecting on my recordings of all 32 sonatas, the Evening Standard remarked, "If Beethoven hadn't written his piano sonatas in mind for himself, he might quite happily have written them for Crossland," a sentiment that humbles and inspires me in interpreting these monumental works.
