Earthbound Dreams, Op. 74 (2025)
for Clarinet, Viola, and Piano

Composed in 2025, Earthbound Dreams, Op. 74 is a five-movement chamber work exploring the delicate tension between stillness and motion, weight and lift, and the interplay between the tangible and the imagined. The piece unfolds as a sequence of atmospheric and emotional states, unified by a sense of grounded lyricism and subtle transformation.

Scored for clarinet, viola, and piano, the work draws on the ensemble’s distinctive timbral palette: the clarinet’s fluid, vocal expressivity, the viola’s introspective warmth, and the piano’s ability to both anchor and illuminate the musical texture. Throughout, the three instruments engage in a closely integrated dialogue, shifting fluidly between foreground and accompaniment.

The work was premiered in 2025 at the Harrow Summer Festival by The Trident Trio.

I. Hypnosis
The opening movement unfolds in a state of suspended awareness. Repetitive figures and gently shifting harmonies create a hypnotic soundscape in which time feels softened and fluid. Musical ideas emerge gradually, as if drawn from stillness.

II. Dark Clouds
A more unsettled atmosphere takes shape. Fragmented motifs, darker sonorities, and increased rhythmic tension suggest gathering unease. The interplay between instruments becomes more restless, evoking a brooding, unstable energy.

III. Sunset
This movement offers warmth and reflection. Lyrical lines unfold over a softly glowing harmonic backdrop, suggesting a moment of calm tinged with nostalgia. The clarinet and viola sing in close dialogue, supported by delicate piano textures.

IV. Pitter Patter
Lightness and motion return in a playful, rhythmically driven movement. Quick, articulated figures pass between the instruments, creating a sense of fleeting energy—reminiscent of raindrops or scattered motion. The texture is transparent and animated.

V. Beneath a Whispered Current
The final movement turns inward, exploring a subdued and enigmatic sound world. Subtle, flowing undercurrents shape the music beneath a restrained surface. The work closes in quiet reflection, leaving a sense of openness rather than finality.

Throughout Earthbound Dreams, Crossland balances clarity with ambiguity, allowing musical ideas to evolve organically across the five movements. The work invites the listener into a contemplative space where fleeting impressions and deeper emotional currents coexist.
