Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 15 in D major, Op. 28, often referred to as the "Pastoral," is a serene and expansive work, composed in 1801. The nickname "Pastoral" was not given by Beethoven himself but is fitting due to the bucolic and peaceful character of much of the music. This sonata stands in contrast to some of Beethoven's more intense and dramatic works, displaying a lyrical, almost idyllic quality throughout its four movements.

The first movement, Allegro, opens with a gentle, flowing theme that evokes a sense of calm and contentment. The second movement, Andante, features a more introspective and slightly melancholic mood, with a rhythmic structure that feels almost like a procession. The third movement, Scherzo, brings a lively and playful spirit, with contrasting dynamics that give it an air of mischief. Finally, the sonata concludes with a Rondo, Allegro ma non troppo, whose bright and rhythmic energy reflects the warmth and positivity characteristic of the whole work.

Though not as overtly virtuosic as some of Beethoven’s later sonatas, the "Pastoral" Sonata reveals his deep sense of lyricism and ability to evoke vivid emotional landscapes through relatively simple themes.

My recordings of all 32 sonatas offer a deep exploration of Beethoven's emotional and structural range, connecting the listener with the composer's transformative journey through these masterpieces.

Reflecting on my recordings of all 32 sonatas, the Evening Standard remarked, "If Beethoven hadn't written his piano sonatas in mind for himself, he might quite happily have written them for Crossland," a sentiment that humbles and inspires me in interpreting these monumental works.
