Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 4 in E-flat major, Op. 7, composed in 1796, is often referred to as the "Grand Sonata" due to its ambitious scale and scope. One of Beethoven's longest piano sonatas, it reflects his early mastery and boldness in expanding the classical sonata form. The first movement, Allegro molto e con brio, is energetic and full of rhythmic drive, showcasing Beethoven's daring use of harmony and dynamic contrasts. The second movement, Largo, con gran espressione, is a deeply expressive and lyrical section, foreshadowing the emotional depth found in his later works. The third movement, Allegro, is a lively and playful scherzo, filled with Beethoven's characteristic wit and surprise. The sonata concludes with a rondo, Poco Allegretto e grazioso, marked by elegance and rhythmic subtlety.

Op. 7 is a significant early work that points to Beethoven’s evolving genius, combining virtuosity, depth, and innovation, setting the stage for his later masterpieces.

My recordings of all 32 sonatas offer a deep exploration of Beethoven's emotional and structural range, connecting the listener with the composer's transformative journey through these masterpieces.

Reflecting on my recordings of all 32 sonatas, the Evening Standard remarked, "If Beethoven hadn't written his piano sonatas in mind for himself, he might quite happily have written them for Crossland," a sentiment that humbles and inspires me in interpreting these monumental works.
