THREE SACRED SONGS, OP. 89 (2026)
The Coming of the Messiah · The Love of Jesus · The Light of the World
Three Sacred Songs was commissioned by Mervyn Williams in September 2026 for the Christmas services at All Saints Church, Marlow. The original commission was for a Christmas carol, but the creative process soon developed into something more substantial. Shortly after receiving the commission, I began work on a series of sacred choral pieces, which ultimately became this collection of three complementary songs. The complete work was finished in October 2026.
The three songs explore distinct yet closely connected aspects of the Christian faith. The Coming of the Messiah looks towards the fulfilment of the promise of Christ’s coming; The Love of Jesus reflects upon the central message of divine love; and The Light of the World celebrates the spiritual hope and illumination that Christ brings to humanity.
Although the collection originated from a commission for the Christmas season, the music is not intended to be restricted to Advent and Christmas services alone. Each song addresses themes that remain relevant throughout much of the Christian liturgical year. The expectation and promise expressed in The Coming of the Messiah, the enduring message of The Love of Jesus, and the hope and spiritual illumination of The Light of the World make the collection suitable for a variety of services and occasions, including those celebrating the life and ministry of Christ, the love of God, and the continuing presence of faith in everyday life.
Written for solo soprano, SATB choir and organ, the three songs are conceived as a unified collection while allowing each to stand independently. They may be performed together as a complete work or selected individually according to the needs and character of a particular service or concert programme.
It is my hope that these songs will offer choirs and congregations music that is both expressive and accessible, providing opportunities for reflection, devotion and celebration well beyond the Christmas season.
